Any ideas? The bottle costs 90 bucks with the sensor but I don't think its needed if disconnected and jumped the light is on.Click to expand.I have a 2007 Saturn with a 2.2L Ecotec engine. Hi I'm new to this site but gladly found it.I just started getting this light as well, disconnected the switch wire and jumped it but the light still comes on and goes out when it wants to. BTW it only started since the weather has cooled down, I don't think that would have anything to do with it but? Anyways any ideas out there other than what Ive stated? It rarely does it again throughout the rest of the day and the fact that it doesn't stay on and turns off quickly makes me think maybe its a sticky sensor and i need to remove the reservoir and rinse the hell out of it to free it up. It comes on anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute after start up and stays on for maybe a minute at the most, it never runs hot, the gauge is always between just over 1/4 and just under 3/8. The closed cooling system with the reservoir/surge container as part of the sealed system allows longer use of coolants like Dexcool that isn't exposed to the atmosphere.Īnyone had a problem with the low coolant level light coming on at start up? Ive checked the fluid before start up and its fine right where it should be but almost every morning lately I get the same warning light. Nothing is perfect so topping off once every three years with less than a pint is about as close to a sealed cooling system as GM can make. The occasional topping off would be from years of use as evaporation losses eventually results in a low coolant level. Theoretically, a closed cooling system that's never opened and never leaks past any places where coolant would leak from pressure should never deplete any coolant. No harm is done as the engine doesn't know any better and you get to see a new color mix. The loss is the advantage of the longer life of the better coolant. Even if coolant were mixed the only caveat would be to replace this concoction based on the shorter life span of the two coolants. If you decide to switch to Prestone or the universal coolant just perform a normal coolant flush, twice if you like, to rid the system of previous coolant in preparation of your choice of replacement coolant. Since I drive less, my replacement interval would be in 5yrs instead of 100k miles. Flushed the system and refilled with new Dexcool and should be good for another 5yrs. I'm a good example recently replaced original clean Dexcool after 5yrs (last year) on my 元00. Sort of like the squeaky wheel gets all the attention while all the others quietly go on without a complaint. The facts I'm impressed with would be the thousands that have suffered engine damage against millions(?) that have quietly used recommended Dexcool without any issues. There are naysayers on these forums warning to stay away from Dexcool but these are the loud ones with no facts and I mean F_A_C_T_S. If one were to compare prices on pre-mixed diluted and the equivalent to one gallon of straight coolant, the pre-mix costs more. There are coolants being sold already pre-mixed and touted as "PRE-MIXED! NO WATER NEEDED!" to make it seem as if you're buying a great product but buyer beware. And all straight undiluted coolant is mixed with distilled water for the 50/50 concentration. I know the coolant system on the L is a closed system, but I gotta think you could lose some coolant after 95,000 miles (actually 195,000 on mine, but I last changed it at 100,000)?ĭexcool is supposed to be good for 5yrs or 100,000 miles. It wouldn't hurt to remove the reservoir container, if its dirty, and rinse it out completely as suggested before to ensure a non-sticking float when filling up with new coolant.Īs I recall I think you're supposed to mix with distilled water.but does that hold true with Dex Cool as well?Īs for the float and tank it looks pretty clean, so I think I'll just top off first and see if that does the trick. If it does then you'll know when the flush and fill is done to fill above the level mark. Since you're going to flush the system it won't hurt to over fill the container and see if the low coolant indicator stays off. One way to test whether your level needs to be topped off a little higher than recommended is to fill the container above the fill level with water and observe over the next few days. Its just a level sensor and not a way to detect dirty coolant.
